Walter Hilton (14th Century English mystic)
interprets the exclusive-sounding saying “No one comes to the Father except
through me.” Jesus is referring to His humanity, which is perfect humility and
charity. This is the only “me” who can come to the Father. In order to come to the Father, we must become like Jesus.
I would add that this has nothing to do with our opinion of
Jesus or what we say we believe about
Jesus, only being like Him in His humility and love. Obviously, people can be like Jesus
without ever hearing of Him. So, Christ-like people, be they Christian believers
or not, can come to the Father.
